CHRISTO

Christo, born in 1935 in Bulgaria as Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, began his artistic journey after studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. In the 1950s he left the country and settled in Paris, where his meeting with Jeanne-Claude marked the beginning of a lifelong collaboration. His early experiments focused on wrapped objects—bottles, furniture, everyday items—which gradually evolved into interventions on an increasingly large scale. As early as the 1960s, the duo’s artistic practice shifted toward environmental projects capable of engaging entire urban and natural spaces. With their move to the United States in 1964, their work acquired an international dimension. This led to some of the most celebrated installations in contemporary art, such as Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin and The Gates (2005) in New York, which temporarily transform the landscape and the perception of public space. A fundamental element of their work is temporality: each piece is conceived to exist only for a limited period, making the creative process—comprising planning, negotiations, and execution—an integral part of the artwork itself. Christo passed away in 2020 in New York, leaving behind a unique legacy defined by its radical nature and independence.
