Among the major protagonists of the international artistic scene, Claudio Parmiggiani is a rare artist. His voluntary “exile” from the Italian art scene, and his obstinate silence for over forty years, are worth, in today’s artistic world, as a stance of almost unique radicality. In a context in which the confusion of values is the rule, his has become a moral presence and his silence a critical authority. Deliberately far from the “current events” of contemporary art, far from groups or movements, Parmiggiani was able to develop a language that was innovative, personal and at the same time profoundly universal. Its materials are dust and ash, fire and air, shadow and colour, light and stone, glass and steel, blood and marble… By assembling fragments of the world, bells, butterflies, books, boats, stars, and statues, it gives birth to unusual images which, in their tragic beauty, seem strangely familiar to us.
