VERENA LOEWENSBERG

Verena Loewensberg (1912–1986) was a Swiss artist and a key figure in the Zurich Concrete Art movement. She studied weaving in Basel, which influenced her appreciation for structure and geometry. In the 1930s, she became closely associated with Max Bill and Richard Paul Lohse, forming the core of Concrete Art in Switzerland. Loewensberg’s work is characterized by a precise use of color, geometric abstraction, and a sense of visual harmony. Her compositions often explore the interplay between form, color, and rhythm, creating works that are both rigorous and dynamic. Though she maintained a low public profile during her lifetime, Loewensberg’s art has been celebrated for its clarity and innovation. Her works are included in collections of major institutions, such as the Kunsthaus Zurich and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She remains a significant figure in the history of abstract art.
