PETER PHILLIPS
Born in 1939 in Birmingham, England, he is one of the greatest exponents of English and international pop art. He studied at the Royal College of Art with David Hockney, Allen Jones, R.B. Kitaj and others who like him would later become important figures of modern art. He moved to New York participating in exhibitions with Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist. His work was absolutely in line with American culture and with the typical iconography of pop art which incorporates elements of advertising and the street revisited in a pop key. In 1963 he participated in the Paris Biennial and in 1964 a group of his works were exhibited at the Pop art exhibition held in Vienna and Berlin. In 1972 a Westfälischer Kunstverein retrospective in Munster was dedicated to him and at the TATE Gallery in London in 1976. Between ’82 and ’83 two other important retrospectives were held at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford. In the 90s he exhibited mainly in Canada and the United States in Houston, Boston and New York. His graphic production is particularly appreciated and is often part of important permanent collections such as that of the TATE in London and the MoMA in New York. Peter Phillips currently lives and works in his studio gallery in Australia.
